This Branch was formed from Newcastle Retired Rail Staff, an organisation for former staff of all grades who worked in the Railway
Industry, and the former Darlington Branch, which merged with Newcastle in 2005. Membership currently stands at about
500 - male
and female - and provides welfare advice and help on many topics of interest to
pensioners and also helps ex-colleagues to keep in touch.
Weekly Meetings - Gateshead
Railway Club
The N&DRRS meet
informally on Monday
and Thursday mornings at the Gateshead
Railway Club. These meetings
are of a social nature, where friends meet for a chat and a cup of tea or coffee
and a biscuit.
Quarterly Meetings -
Gateshead Railway Club
As well as the weekly meetings, quarterly meetings are also held, where items of business are
discussed, usually
followed by a Guest Speaker.
Speakers may cover a wide range of topics - these have included subjects such
as the work of
Magistrates, the Fire Service, Police work and security measures, to illustrated talks on holidays and
travel etc. The number of members attending the quarterly meetings is
generally around 60 - 70, whilst the weekly meetings attract around 25 members.
Our previous venue,
South Gosforth Social Club, now only opens from 16:00 hours on certain
afternoons, which does not fit in so well with our meetings. We are very
grateful to Gateshead Railway Club for accommodating our quarterly
meetings at their premises. The club is at the South end of the High Level
Bridge and is easily accessible by bus. Meetings are held on the Ground
Floor - there are no stairs to climb!
Social Activities and Holidays
N&DRRS also organise a range of social
events - for details, see Branch Diary. As well as holidays and day trips
we also arrange an annual Christmas Lunch -
in recent years we have enjoyed a very good meal at the Assembly Rooms, Newcastle.

How we are organised
N&DRRS is organised and controlled by a General Committee
which meets four times a year, likewise an Outings
Sub-Committee, which, again, meets four times a year. The
Annual General Meeting takes place in November.
Newsletter
A Newsletter, entitled "In Touch" is produced
three times a year. This is intended to help and inform those members who are
unable to attend meetings so that they can keep abreast of events and happenings
within the Branch.
To find out more about N&DRRS, please contact us via Membership
Enquiries.
