BTPF Anglia took the initiative to create a memorial for the railway
industry at the National Memorial Arboretum,
Alrewas, Staffordshire:
|

|
On Sunday 25th April 2004, the
Anglia Branch planted a tree at the National
Memorial Arboretum to mark the lives of those who worked for British Rail
or Shipping and who lived or worked in East Anglia. "Our
Tree" is a field maple with a commemorative plaque. Twenty
three members attended the Service at the NMA Chapel, at which a
two-minute silence was observed, accompanied by the Last Post and
Reveille. There was then a guided tour of the site - 60 plots with
40,000 trees - a peaceful and beautiful memorial of the 20th Century with
many emotional connotations, including Ack Ack and ATS, the Merchant Navy
Convoy, the Burma Railway and "Shot at Dawn" statue. |
