Old Southeronians

Croydon & East Surrey - Branch Diary

Summary of events

For details of all these events, go to the Diary Section.

Newsletter - click here to download a copy of our Summer 2011 Newsletter.
(Note that private address details for Branch Officers are removed from the downloadable version of this document.)  Please be patient - this is a large file and may require a few minutes to download.

Rambles - Croydon & East Surrey Branch Ramblers meet on the second Tuesday of each month from March to November (dates and details given in our Diary below). Details of rambles arranged by the London West Branch are also listed here and on their Branch Diary (click here to view) - these take place on the first Tuesday of each month.

All newcomers, including non-railway friends, are always very welcome on our rambles. Bring packed lunches and drinks and wear suitable boots or shoes and clothing. The pace is always very gentle; we do not rush anywhere.
**Please check train times against the current timetable before travelling**
- click here to check your train times on the National Rail website or here for Transport Direct, where you will find all types of travel information, including trains, buses, trams and car routes.

Coffee mornings - Last Wednesday of each month (except December) at the Clock Tower Café, Katherine Street, Croydon (adjacent to Croydon Library) - no need to book, just turn up! You are also cordially invited to attend the Coffee Mornings organised by the London West Branch.

Lunch Group - our Lunch Group, launched in 2008, has proved very popular. We meet on the third Thursday of every alternate month (i.e. February, April, June, August, October and December), for a meal at a pub or inn within easy walking distance of a railway station.  If you have a favourite lunchtime venue that is easily accessible by rail and can accommodate a party of 20 to 30 people, please let Graham Harris know (contact details available to members).

The BTPF Memorial Project is now well underway and a Dedication Ceremony is planned for Tuesday 22nd May 2012 at 14:00 hours.

You are all invited to attend!

The Service of Dedication will take place around our memorial. Maurice Holmes, our President, will lead for the BTPF. Reverend James Lindsay of The Railway Mission, currently Chaplain (East Midlands), will prepare and conduct the service.

The National Memorial Arboretum serves good meals in their restaurant at a reasonable price, but space is limited. Alternatively you can take your own food. Teas, coffee etc., are available.

Admission to the Arboretum is free but donations are welcome as over £3,000 is needed every day to keep the Arboretum viable.

A free shuttle bus service will be available between Burton upon Trent and the National Memorial Arboretum also from Lichfield City/Lichfield Trent Valley to and from the National Memorial Arboretum.

In addition - Arriva have announced the start of a new bus service, serving the National Memorial Arboretum. Routes 12 and 112 between Burton-on-Trent/Lichfield/Birmingham call additionally at the National Memorial Arboretum.

If enough people are interested, arrangements for a coach will be made to pick up at Woking and Croydon, for those Members living south of the Thames. This would allow for members to travel by a direct coach to the National Memorial Arboretum for the Dedication Service.

If you are interested in attending and would like to travel by coach please contact Peter Blanthorn as soon as possible (contact details in our Newsletter). This will enable him to measure the interest and get a cost for those wishing to travel by coach before final arrangements are made.
