CHAIRMAN'S SPRING / SUMMER MESSAGE 2010

Hello Everyone

We now know that our Railway Pension will not increase during 2010.

Unfortunately millions of retired non railway people are suffering the same fate because, like us in the rail industry, most are bound to the inflation figure known as the Retail Price Index (RPI)as it stood 6 months ago at minus -1.4% in September 2009.  Most pensioners have never encountered a negative RPI that affects their pension payments and it will be difficult for them to come to terms with no increase this year.  The good news is that we will not have our Rail Industry pension reduced by the -1.4%.

Perhaps now is the time to review whether using the Retail Prices index (RPI) is the right way to decide pension levels.  Campaigners, including the National Pensioners Convention (NPC), have used their strong voice to highlight that the typical pensioner household has a different spending pattern to those of working age, so an average measure of prices and inflation can provide a misleading picture.

Pensioners tend to spend a higher proportion of their limited income on items such as fuel, food and energy.  We are not big spenders on luxuries such as large TVs or iPods.

The Office for National Statistics produces a separate measure of pensioner inflation, though this is not used to set any pensions or benefits: we should ask our politicians WHY?

The recession is thought to have bottomed out but we can never be sure. World stock markets have certainly improved by around 30%, compared with the low of just over 12 months ago and as a result pension funds now reflect that improvement but we have a long way to go before the heights of December 2007 can be reached. A critical date in the near future for the Railway Pension Fund will be 31st December 2010, as that is the valuation date. Members can forget surplus distributions for the foreseeable future; unfortunately the focus will be on a deficit figure and how that can be balanced, and this will be a difficult challenge for our active colleagues.

Congratulations to John Mayfield the National Treasurer of the BTPF. At the AGM held in March John decided to step down after 16 years of first class service. He was unanimously elected Vice President of the BTPF. Well done John and thanks for your major contribution towards the work of the BTPF. John will remain as a Trustee of the Railway Pension Scheme.

Chris Jago was elected as Treasurer and Les McDowell was elected as Vice Chairman. Congratulations to both.

BTPF Recruitment

Can I make a personal appeal to you all to join the BTPF?

Please can all current members introduce their spouse / partner / friend to join as a member? After all they may well receive a rail pension as a dependant in future years.

Do you know of someone who has recently retired or is about to retire from the transport industry? If you recruit just one or two people it would greatly help to maintain a membership of 20,000 plus and play a significant part in strengthening the BTPF position with retaining our very own representative on the Trustee Board of the Railway Pension Scheme.

Membership is open to all retired / preserved pensioners and also to active transport industry employees aged 55 years or over

Enjoy the British Transport Pensioners' Federation website at www.btpf.org.uk

BTPF is affiliated to the National Pensioners' Convention (NPC) at national / regional levels. This is the only pensioners' group that lobbies Government on behalf of pensioners on all benefits - for example: free local bus passes nationwide.

Many BTPF branches also offer attractive social benefits

Newsletters - these publications contain items on - railway and state pension matters - free travel - news of colleagues

Branch meetings for rail and state pension news

Look under Sussex Branch for details of the Matinée Club - it's really excellent and yes, you can join!

Outdoor activities - walking - trekking - cycling

Organised away days

Short break holidays

Social get-togethers for fine chat - dancing - a little gossip? (who on earth would do that!)

Christmas parties

Our members stay young and active though the friendship that membership brings

Details of BTPF branches and how to join are shown on this Website

You can speak to me or leave a message on 07931 321687
